Your file stays on your computer
Smallpdf works like most online PDF sites. You choose a file, it goes up to their servers, their computers do the job, and you download the result. Smallpdf says it deletes files an hour after processing.
That may all be true. The problem is that you cannot check it. When a file is on someone else's server, what happens to it depends on their systems, their staff and their policies, and policies can change. A company that receives your files could keep copies, read them, or use them to train software, and you would have no way to know. We are not saying Smallpdf does any of this. We are saying that when you upload, you have to trust that it does not.
Easy File Tools does not ask for that trust. The tools are code that runs inside your browser tab. When you open a PDF, your browser reads it from your disk, and your own processor does the work. The file is never sent to us, so we cannot keep it, read it, or give it to anyone, even if we wanted to or someone asked us to.
You do not have to take our word for it. Open a tool, then turn off Wi-Fi or unplug the network cable. The tool still works, because nothing needs to go anywhere. If you are technical, open your browser's developer tools and watch the network tab while a file is processed: the file is not sent.
No daily limit, no file size cap
Smallpdf's free plan gives you a few tasks each day. When you use them up, you either upgrade or wait until tomorrow. That is fine for one quick merge. It is not fine when you have a stack of scans to sort out before a deadline.
We do not count anything. Merge ten files, compress the result, split it again, and convert the pages to images. There is no counter and nothing to wait for. We also do not set a limit on file size or page count. Your device does the work, so the only real limit is its memory. Long reports and large scans work well on most laptops. A very large file on an older phone can be slow.
No account, no email, no trial
There is no sign-up form here. Open a tool, add your file, and download the result. We do not ask for your email address, and there is no free trial that turns into a bill if you forget to cancel.
Smallpdf asks you to sign in for its trial and for Pro, because it keeps your documents in its cloud. We never have your documents, so we have no reason to know who you are.
Free, and how that is possible
It is fair to ask how a free tool pays for itself. Because your own device does the work, we do not pay for servers that process other people's files. Serving the web page costs very little, so we can keep every tool free, with no paid plan and no trial.
There is also no watermark on your files, and no tool is held back for paying users.
It keeps working when the connection drops
The tools run in your browser, so they do not need the internet once a page is open. Start a job on a train, lose signal, and you can still finish it and save the result.
Some tools download extra data the first time you use them, for example the language data for text recognition (OCR). Open those tools once while you are online.

- How good is the PDF to Word conversion?
- Normal text documents convert cleanly. Pages with many columns, complex tables or unusual fonts can need some cleanup in Word, as with any converter. For a scanned PDF, run OCR first so the text can be read.
