About Change audio quality

Change Audio Quality re-encodes a track at a bitrate and sample rate you choose, so it fits a storage, upload, or playback requirement without changing what is in the recording.

How to use it

Open the file and note whether it is speech, dense music, or something full of high-frequency detail.

Set bitrate, sample rate, channels, and format to the smallest that still suits where it is going.

Encode, listen to the hardest passage on headphones, and check the new size and duration.

Options

Bitrate sets how much data each second gets. The sample rates offered are 22.05, 44.1, and 48 kHz.
Channels can follow the source, or be forced to mono or stereo.

Limitations

Every lossy re-encode adds damage, even at a higher bitrate than the source.
Dropping the sample rate or folding to mono cannot be undone in the exported copy.

Common questions

Bitrate or sample rate, which matters more?

They do different jobs. Bitrate decides how much detail survives compression. Sample rate decides how much frequency range there is to compress.

Is stereo worth it for one speaker?

Usually not. Mono spends the whole bitrate on the voice instead of two near-identical channels.
